What happens if I write a check and it bounces?

If you write a check and do not have enough money in your account by the time the check clears, the check will be returned to the payee (e.g., “bounce”).

Please see our current Fee Schedule, as there will be a Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fee for this.

We have several options to avoid bouncing a check, including signing up for additional overdraft protection, or attaching a savings account or loan to your checking account to cover accidental overdrafts.

Call 888.723.7328 or make an appointment at a local branch to discuss your options.

There are also various practices you can follow to ensure that your checks always clear, including:

  • Never write checks without available funds
  • Balance your checkbook regularly
  • Obtain overdraft protection through Stanford FCU
  • Monitor your available balance through Online or Mobile Banking
