Fraud prevention: You won’t believe what a scammer told me
When scammers get desperate, they’ll say anything to scare you into making a bad decision. Have you heard any of these outlandish lies?
“Your credit union is in on the scam.”
A scammer called a member claiming she was being scammed through fraudulent transactions on her account. The icing on the cake? The scammer claimed her credit union was in on the scam and couldn’t be trusted.
“Lie to the teller about why you need to withdraw money.”
Scammers know our Member Advisors are always on the lookout for fraud. One indicator is an unusually large cash withdrawal. We had one member confess they were instructed to lie about why they were taking out the money. The scammer told them to say it was for a home renovation project.
“Let me pick up the cash at your house.”
In the boldest of moves, one scammer got a member to withdraw money and coordinated a pickup at the member’s house to “keep the cash safe.” The scammer came with a mask, took the money and left without a trace.
Don’t rush
Remember that scammers rely on someone’s fear of financial disaster to get them to comply with these sorts of requests. Don’t be afraid to slow down and think before acting. If you have any doubts or concerns, your credit union is here to help.
